Transitioning to Post-Secondary Education

Entrance to Universities

Entrance to university normally requires a High School Diploma which includes completion of five specific Grade 12 courses. Each program may require different subjects and entrance averages; therefore, it is recommended that students check admission requirements on a yearly basis. This can be done by checking with the McNally counsellors in Student Support Services in addition to contacting universities directly. As well, plan to visit these institutions during yearly "Open House" sessions to clarify the specific requirements. Students should be aware that many of these programs have limited enrolment policies.

Entrance to Colleges and Technical Institutes

The majority of College programs in Alberta require a High School Diploma. As well, technical programs at NAIT and SAIT prefer a High School Diploma for students entering directly after Grade 12. Prospective students are encouraged to consult with McNally counsellors in Student Support  Services or to view the website of the respective college in which they are interested. As well, plan to visit these institutions during yearly "Open House" sessions to clarify the specific requirements. Students should be aware that many of these programs have limited enrolment policies. Visiting specific college websites and looking at Academic Requirements is useful in understanding which high school courses are needed for certain programs.
